Senior Safety Instrumented Systems Engineer

The Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) Engineer will provide technical leadership in conceptual safety and control system front end loading design services including verification, and control strategy development in alignment with ISA-84/IEC61511 Standards.  There will be associated travel to client sites as required.

Essential Duties:

  • Development of safety instrumented system (SIS) front end loading (FEL) related concepts
  • Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) development.
  • Develop SIS conceptual designs including Safety Instrumented Function Lists (SIF), and Safety Integrity Level calculations (SIL)
  • Develop Design Verification Reports, Cause and Effect Diagrams, and Functional Test Plans
  • Develop Functional Requirements Specifications
  • Technical task management of project related deliverables
  • Participate in Layers of Protection Analysis and subsequent SIL Target Selection
  • Conduct Fault Tree analysis, lifecycle cost analysis, and benefit to cost ratio analysis

Candidate Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred or equivalent work experience is required
  • 12+ years applicable general instrument & controls work experience and 2+ years SIS work experience
  • CFSE, CFSP, and FSE certifications a plus
  • A strong instrument and control system reliability background required
  • Working knowledge of ISA-84/IIEC-61511 Standards, including Probability of Failure on Demand, hardware fault tolerance, safe failure fraction, and nuisance trip reduction techniques
  • Experience with Instrumented Protective Function (IPF) / SIF definition services including list development, IPF/SIFID options financial analysis, and SIL verification techniques
  • Experience with safety and control system front end loading design services including control strategic development
  • Plant level experience with instrument and controls engineering with developing process safety information, instrument specification, P&IDs, cause and effect sheets, and loop sheets
  • Experience with supporting proposal development
  • Experience with capital project support or leadership a plus
  • Experience working with multiple engineering disciplines, as well as contractor management preferred
Job Requirements:
  • Ability to coach junior level technical staff a plus
  • Must be a self-starter and capable of working on an individual basis and in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize workload and deliver quality results on time
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required
